Majorca, Spain - May 2013

We had a bank holiday in early May so I looked at cheap tickets online. For some reason I came across Majorca in Spain. Never been but i had a quick read on Wikitravel and it sounded picturesque and laidback which was what I was in the mood for. So I booked tickets for Damon and I. Work was crazy so I delegated accommodation to him (after pointing him to a specific deal so he just has to email them check availability).

We arrived around midday on Saturday and went to the car place to get our car as the deal included car hire. It turned out that they only have manual cars (i forgot to remind Damon to check this) so he had to drive haha. Score! Spaniards drive on the right which is completely crazy and mind bending especially when going through roundabouts! Also, we were on island time so didn't get away from the car place until about 2. Our resort turned out to be an hour away from Palma which is the main city. So we got there around 3 and was absolutely starving  The streets were dead, presumably everyone was having their siesta. The deal included fruits and drinks so we just blobbed by the pool for a bit.

That night we drove to the neighbouring towns to have a look around and decided to have dinner at this very touristy looking 'castle'.

The food turned out to be not at all touristy though. We got some tapas to start. This was beef carpacio.

Deep fried baby octopus

My main was a Majorcan fish dish. It was goooood. Fish layered with potatoes and vegestable in a light sauce.

Damon got the lamb which was really really soft, with an amazing honey sauce.

Breakfast was included in the deal and it was your stock standard continental fare.

We drove back to Palma bright and early to catch the historic train to Soller, a little seaside town about half an hour away from Palma. Check the girl out... she didn't look impressed.

I came across this Spanish snack so had to get two obviously. It's an ensaimada and this one has peach jam i think.

Chocolate. I don't like them. They are like a poor cousins of the glorious croissant.

The day was gorgeous and every photo looked like it should be a Microsoft screensaver haha. The train took us through picturesque valleys and then up the mountain to get to Soller. We passed by orange groves which is what Soller is known for.

Damon on board the train which stopped for us to get off to take pictures at a lookout point.

I saw this gorgeous lady with her twins so started stalking her haha.

Her husband wasn't bad either!!!!!!!!!

We got to Soller and jumped on the tram that took us into town centre.

There were loads of restaurants and we chose this - El Pirata which had a pirates theme. Again, it looked naff but the food, oh the food!

We sat right by the port and our view was glorious. The lunch took a couple of hours and I got brown and a bit burnt by the end of it. Ah bliss! Exactly what I needed after a month of intense work.

We got some drinks to start with and then because we couldn't be bothered choosing, we went with the super festival meal which was a secret for EUR26 each.

First up - tapas! The prawns were amazing, big juicy and succulent wrapped up in a crunchy batter.

Beef wrapped around rocket. Wasn't bad either.

Pretty salmon on top of bellinis.

It was followed by a fish course which was light and yum. Pan fried John Dory on a bed of veges and inky black noodles.

Main course was a trio of meat - lamb, steak and pork medallion with chargrilled veges. The meat were gooood.

Last but not least, a dessert platter of sorbet, cheesecake and molten lave cake. Such AMAZING quality and value. We waddled off for a walk.

And because I didn't have enough at lunch, I decided to get an ice cream made with Soller's oranges.

We got off a stop earlier than the railway station and looked around a square for a bit as we had time to kill. Every European village/city worth its salt has a square and there's always cute cobbly streets running off it and a church that it centred itself around.

Dinner that night were some oh so soft sandwiches we bought from a cafe in Palma which I gobbled without taking photos and these Soller oranges which were yum!

Oh and a tart from the cafe... obviously.

Last day in Majorca saw us checking out early and driving back past Palma to the other far side of the island. We went to a little beach called Sant Elm which was recommended by someone.

It was another glorious day. I graciously allowed Damon to sunbathe for an hour before we moved on with our (ok my) schedule for the day.

We had lunch at Sant Elm and then made our way back to potter around Palma.

Some square which has nothing compared to San Marco haha.

There you have it. We didn't really do much in terms of checking out churches or museums but we ate well and poked around cute villages which was awesome. Right up there as one of my favourites getaway actually.
