Love Letters (Photos)

I was looking through Mum and Dad's old photos and found lots with notes written on the back. This must be how they used to convey love in the olden days heheheh. Dad's handwriting is very flowery so I can't really understand every word he wrote but I got the gist of them.

My dearest Hua (Mum),
Look, I am wearing the shirt that you bought me and I look very handsome in it. I believe that I will succeed in life one day. You are unforgettable.
Yours, Xiang (Dad).

Hua Zai (Mum), Yours, Xiang (Dad).

Hua,
Wonder what he is thinking about?
From Xiang.

Hua,
Thinking of you la!
Xiang.

Hua,
Am I handsome in this outfit? I've put on weight so not so good looking anymore.
Yours, Xiang.

I only found one from Mum to Dad. Hehehe

Look, Robin!
Pretty le???
Hua

Hehehehe so funny and sweet.

Sibu: Day 22

I wanted pien nuit in an effort to not eat as much so Mum took me to Ing Lok - Chek Ming uncle's sister's cafe off Lanang Road. I used to come here a lot with Mum for breakfast when I was attending afternoon school sessions.

Time has stood still here. They still wash their dirty dishes right next to the tables, using cold water.

See the lady with the cat t shirt making the noodles? That's her daughter in the pink top there helping her. The lady used to be like the young girl now, helping her mother. Her mother has retired and she has taken over. Day in and day out, over and over and over and over and over again.

Awful thick pien nuit

We went and bought freshly made panggang in the afternoon. They were piping hot. Mum buys heaps every time and then freeze them.

Mum also bought mackerel because that's one of my favourite fishes. Check out this mar kar. It was caught in the middle of feeding because Mum found a fish in its mouth.

The little fish was a decent size too. Greedy mar kar.

But wait, there's more!! Mum found another half digested fishy in its tummy. It looked so mutant. Like something Ah Here would watch in a horror film.

Mum cooked that night. Deep fried and yummy with soy sauce

Store bought gu heung. Not that nice.

Bek ting yuek chicken soup. YUM!

Organic (snigger snigger) eggplants from Mum's garden

Organic lady's fingers from own garden

What was left of the wor neh. Mum had it with ice cream.

Sigh, I miss those kiss attacks

Sibu: Day 21

I wanted to have bak kut teh (pork leg soup with rice) and I wanted to make Ah Here seethe with jealousy so I told Mum to take me to the cafe that Ah Here ALWAYS has to visit if she is in town.. allegedly because that's what she told the boss when she flirted with him but it was news to me at that time. We found a park and walked there... only to find it no longer there. So we went to the other place instead.

 Not that nice.

Dinner was at Hock Chu Leu where Mum and Dad had their wedding reception (5 tables).

Sea cucumber soup - nice and sour.

Braised wong bok cabbage with mushrooms - a Hock Chu Leu specialty

Nice sweet and sour fish

Mum ordered a woh neh meaning the bird's nest taro with mixed veges inside. The waitress nodded and immediately asked if we wanted fruits. I suspected she meant the sweet woh neh but Mum waved my objections aside. Oh well, I don't mind. More woh neh for me! Look at all the oil pooling at the edges.

Gulp... one third goneski.

Siu mai

Because the woh neh turned out differently to what Mum expected, she then ordered another dish - fried noodles. Twas madness, yet somehow normal for us. Heheheheh.

After all that heavy eating, I was in desperate need of a walk so we walked to the nearby Pasar Malam Night Market.

Typical presentation of beverages for sale in Malaysia

Mum immediately had to buy Lauren some pink undies.

I can't believe we used to shop for clothes at the markets.......

Thick version of the crispy peanut pancakes that Mei likes

New product I noticed - HUGE version of the crispy peanut pancakes

 Compare to the water bottles.

Banana fritters and other deep fried snacks

Steamed goodies

Quite a few stalls selling these roasted meats...

Pig's head anyone?
